Stitch patterns Rib stitch(in the round):*k1, p1*, repeat *–*. Stockinette stitch (in the round): knit all rounds. Stockinette stitch (flat): knit all sts on right-side rows, purl all sts on wrong-side rows.
Gauge 14 sts and 19 rows in stockinette stitch with two yarns held together = 10 cm x 10 cm (4 x 4 in). Important: Knit a gauge swatch before starting this project as your individual tension will affect the size of your finished knit when working with Halaus yarn. If necessary, adjust your needle size. This knit has plenty of stretch. After blocking, the gauge is 13 sts and 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in).
Techniques used
M1R: (= make one right, or right-leaning increase) Use your left needle to pick up the strand between the last stitch and the next stitch from back to front and knit into the front of this stitch. M1L: (= make one left, or left-leaning increase) Use your left needle to pick up the strand between the last stitch and the next stitch from front to back and knit into the back of this stitch. Double stitch (DS): After turning your work, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front (sl1pw wyif), then lift your yarn up and over the needle, pulling on it until it creates a double stitch.
Construction
This sweater is worked seamlessly from the bottom up. The body and sleeves are worked separately in the round. They are then joined together, with the top section worked in one piece. To assemble, the short underarm seams are sewn.
Notes
The sleeve length specified here is for men’s sizing. If you’re making this sweater for a woman or younger wearer, work the sleeves 3–6 cm (1.25–2.5 in) shorter than indicated in pattern.
Body
With two yarns held together (Halaus + Tuuli), caston140(150)160(172)182(192)204(214)sts.Checkthatyourstitchesarenottwistedbeforejoiningtoworkintheround.PlacestitchmarkerhereforBOR. Work in rib stitch for approx. 6 cm (2.5 in) = 10 rounds.
Work in stockinette in the round for 34(34)34.5(34.5)35(35)35.5(35.5) cm [13.25(132.5)13.5(13.5)13.75(13.75)14(14) in].
Divide the sts into two sections. At the beginning of round, bind off 4(4)5(6)6(6)7(8) sts for the armhole, work the 66(71)75(80)85(90)95(99) sts across the front, bind off 4(4)5(6)6(6)7(8) sts for the other armhole and work the 66(71)75(80)85(90)95(99) sts across the back. Leave the sts for the body to one side as you work the sleeves. Do not break yarn here, join in a new skein for the sleeve.
Sleeves
With two yarns held together (Halaus + Tuuli), cast on 40(40)42(42)42(44)44(44) sts and distribute the sts evenly across 4 double pointed needles or use the longer circular needles if opting for Magic Loop method. Join to work in the round and use a stitch marker for BOR. Work in rib stitch for approx. 6 cm (2.5 in) = 10 rounds.
Work 12(12)10(10)6(6)6(6) rounds in stockinette before working sleeve increases: k1, M1L, knit all sts until 1 st remains, M1R, k1. Repeat these increases on every 10th(8th)8th(8th)7th(7th)6th(6th) round a further 6(7)7(8)9(9)10(11) times = 54(56)58(60)62(64)66(68) sts. When the sleeve measures 41(41)41.5(41.5)42(42)42.5(43) cm [16(16)16.25(16.25)16.5(16.5)16.75(17) in] (excluding rib), work the next round until 2(2)3(3)3(4)4(4) sts remain. Work the next round until 2(2)3(3)3(4)4(4) sts remain. Bind off the next 4(4)5(6)6(6)7(8) sts for the armhole and set the remaining 50(52)53(54)56(58)59(60) sts aside. Important The sleeve length is generous, as this pattern is for men. If you would prefer shorter sleeves, you can reduce the length by 3–6 cm (1.25–2.5 in) and make the final 2 increases closer together to achieve the correct number of sleeve sts. Repeat for the other sleeve.
Yoke
Slip all sts onto the longer circular needle and place markers to mark the sections. A new round now begins between the left sleeve and the back section. Use a different colour marker for beginning of round. Work the 50(52)53(54)56(58)59(60) left sleeve sts, then the 66(71)75(80)85(90)95(99) front section sts, the 50(52)53(54)56(58)59(60) right sleeve sts and finally the 66(71)75(80)85(90)95(99) back section sts. You now have 232(246)256(268)282(296)308(318) sts on your needles.
Knit 1 round, then start the raglan decreases as follows: *work across to marker, sm, k1, skp. Continue to knit all sts until 3 sts remain before marker, k2tog, k1, sm*, repeat *–* a further 3 times. You have now decreased by 8 sts.
Continue in stockinette and repeat the decreases on every other row a further 3(4)4(4)5(6)7(7) times = 200(206)216(228)234(240)244(254) sts.
Repeat decreases on the sleeves on every other row a further 15 times while working the decreases on the front and back on every 6th row a total of 5 times = 120(126)136(148)154(160)164(174) sts. Switch to the shorter circular needle when needed.
Next, repeat the decreases on every other row on the sleeves and front and back a total of 4 times = 88(94)104(116)122(128)132(142) sts.
Finally, repeat the decreases on the front and back only on every row a further 3(4)6(8)9(10)11(13) times. The sleeve decreases are now complete = 76(78)80(84)86(88)88(90) sts.
Work flat in stockinette to shape the back of the neckline. Begin the 1st set of short rows from the beginning of this round: work the sleeve sts, after the marker, k1, skp, k6, turn your work. Make DS, p4, p2tog tbl, p1. Purl all sleeve sts. Across the back, p1, p2tog, purl all sts until 3 sts remain, p2tog tbl, p1. Purl all sleeve sts. Across the front, p1, p2tog, p6, turn your work. Make DS. Work the RS round, repeating the decreases across the front and back sections as above. You have now decreased by 8 sts.
Begin the 2nd set of short rows here: work the sleeve sts and after the marker, k1, skp, k2, turn your work. Make DS, p2tog tbl, p1. Purl all sleeve sts. Across the back, p1, p2tog, purl all sts until 3 sts remain, p2tog tbl, p1. Purl all sleeve sts. Across the front, p1, p2tog, p2, turn your work. Make DS. Work the RS round, repeating the decreases across the front and back sections as above. You have now decreased by 8 sts.
After this round, you will have 60(62)64(68)70(72)72(74) sts on your needles: 4(4)5(6)6(6)5(6) sts for each sleeve and 26(27)27(28)28(30)31(31) sts across the front and back.
Mock Neck
Knit 1 more round, decreasing evenly by 0(0)0(2)4(4)4(4) sts = 60(62)64(66)66(68)68(70) sts. Important: Knit each DS as a single stitch. Work 7 cm [2.75 in] in rib in the round and bind off in knit stitch.
Finishing
Join the underarm seams to finish. Weave in any loose ends. Place your work on a flat surface, WS up. Spray lightly with water and leave to dry.
