Novita 7 Sisters: Ystävä circular yoke sweater

This sumptuously soft sweater is guaranteed to become a new wardrobe go-to when temperatures begin to plummet. Designed by Lea Petäjä, Ystävä is seamless sweater, knitted from top down, which means that you can customise the length to suit your style. It is knitted with our 7 Sisters yarn that will create irresistibly soft results.

Language

Gauge swatch Ribbing in the round: *k1, p1*, repeat *–*. Stockinette in the round: knit all rounds. Colorwork in the round: work all rows in stockinette in the round as shown in chart and pattern instructions.

Knitting tension 20 sts and 29 rows of stockinette using larger needles = 10 cm [4 inches] Colorwork tension on yoke approx. 22 sts and 24 rows.

Pattern This sweater is worked in the round from top down.For colorwork floats longer than 4 sts, twist yarns together to anchor on wrong side. It’s also a good idea to vary where you anchor the floats.

Yoke

Cast on 100(104)104(106)108(108) sts in (361) using the smaller needles (40 cm/16 in), work in rib in the round for 5 cm (1½ in).

Switch to the larger needles (40 cm/16 in), work 1(1)1(2)2(2) more rounds, while increasing 2(4)10(14)21(30) sts evenly on the first round = 102(108)114(120)129(138) sts.

Begin colorwork at Row 1 of chart I(II)III(IV)V(VI) and repeat pattern 34(36)38(40)43(46) times. You will have increased by 34(36)38(40)43(46) sts and now have a total of 132(132)136(140)140(144)148(160) sts.

Work chart rows 2–15(16)16(16)17(17). You will have increased by 34(36)38(40)43(46) sts and now have a total of 132(132)136(140)140(144)148(160) sts on your needle.

As you work chart row 16(17)17(17)18(18), inc 34(36)38(40)45(46) sts, evenly distributed. You will now have 204(216)228(240)258(276) sts.

Work chart rows 17(18)18(18)19(19)–23(24)26(26)27(29). The pattern repeats over 4 sts. As you work the next chart row, inc 34(36)38(40)45(46) sts, evenly distributed. You will now have 238(252)266(280)301(322) sts.

Work chart rows 25(26)28(28)29(31)–33(34)36(36)37(39). The pattern repeats over 7 sts. Work the next chart row. You will have increased by 34(36)38(40)43(46) sts and now have a total of 272(288)304(320)344(368) sts.

Work chart rows 35(36)38(38)39(41)–49(50)53(54)55(57).

Lower front and back sections

Now separate the sleeves and front and back sections: work 40(43)45(48)52(57) of the back section sts according to chart row 50(51)54(55)56(58) and slip 56(58)61(63)67(70) sts for the sleeve onto a length of scrap yarn or similar. Cast on 10(10)12(14)16(18) sts for the armhole, work the 80(86)91(97)105(114) front section sts and slip the 56(58)61(63)67(70) sleeve sts on to a length of scrap yarn or similar. Cast on 10(10)12(14)16(18) for the other armhole and work the 40(43)46(49)53(57) back section sts that remain. You now have a total of 180(192)206(222)242(264) sts.

Resume colorwork as per chart. Please note that you may end up with an incomplete pattern at the sides.

Once you have completed chart row 60(61)64(65)67(69), continue to work stockinette in the round using (010).

When the hem measures 34(35)35(37)38(39) cm [13½(13¾)13¾(14½)15(15¼) in] from the armhole, switch to the smaller double pointed needles and work in rib in the round for 5 cm [2 in]. Bind off in rib stitch.

Sleeves

Depending on your preference, you can use double pointed needles or the Magic Loop technique to make the sleeves.

Using the larger needles, pick up 6(6)7(7)9(10) of the cast on sts and return the set aside 56(58)61(63)67(70) sts. Pick up a further 6(6)6(8)8(10) of the cast on sts. You now have a total of 68(70)74(78)84(90) sts on your needles. Place stitch marker to mark the beginning of a round.

Resume colorwork as per chart. Please note that you may end up with an incomplete pattern at the sides.

Once you have completed chart row 60(61)64(65)67(69), continue to work stockinette in the round using (010).

Important When the sleeve measures 3(3)3(2)2(4) cm [1¼(1¼)1¼(¾)¾(1½) in] from the armhole, start to work decreases as follows: k1, k2tog, knit all sts until 3 sts remain, ssk tbl (= slip the next two sts knitwise to right needle, return sts to the left needle and knit together through the back loop) and k1. Continue in stockinette and repeat the decreases every 3.5(3.5)3(3)2.5(2) cm [1½(1½)1¼(1¼)1(¾) in] a further (9)10(12)14(16) times = 48(50)52(52)54(56) sts.

When the sleeve measures 39(40)41(41)42(43) cm [15¼(15¾)16¼(16¼)16½(17) in] from the armhole, switch to the smaller needles and work in rib stitch in the round for 5 cm and cast off in rib.

Finishing

Turn your sweater inside out, place on a flat surface, smooth into shape, spray lightly with water and leave to dry or steam carefully.
