Back

Using yarn A, cast on 122 (130) 142 (150) 158 sts and work 7 cm in rib. Change to st st and work 4 rows.

Start following colourwork chart from row 1 and repeat the 2 st pattern to end. Work rows 2-4 of the chart. Change to yarn A, and continue in st st.

When the work measures 41 (42) 43 (45) 46 cm, change to colourwork and work rows 1-4 of the chart. Change to yarn A, and work 4 rows in st st.

Continue in st st and start shaping the armholes:

Cast off 4 (4) 5 (6) 8 sts at the beginning on next 2 rows.

Change to colourwork starting from row 5 of the chart. Repeat the 4 st pattern and at the same time continue shaping the armholes:

Keeping pattern correct, cast off 2 sts at the beginning of next 4 (4) 6 (6) 6 rows and then 1 st at the beginning of next 8 (8) 6 (8) 8 rows.

Continue following the chart until you have finished row 40. Change to yarn A, and work 6 rows in st st. Work rows 1-4 of the chart. Change to yarn A, and work the rest of the piece in st st.

When you have finished the armhole shapings you have 98 (106) 114 (118) 122 sts on the needle.

When the armhole measures 20 (21) 22 (22) 23 cm, on a RS row cast off centre 36 (36) 36 (38) 38 sts for back neck and work to end. Work each side of the neck separately and shape the first side in the following way:

Next row (WS): Work to end.

Next row (RS, starting at neck edge): Cast off 2 sts, work to end.

Next row: Work to end.

Next row: Cast off 1 st, work to end.

Continue working straight until the armhole measures 22 (23) 24 (24) 25 cm. Cast off 28 (32) 36 (37) 39 sts for shoulder.

Work the other side to match, reversing the shapings.

Front

Work as for back but divide for neck as follows:

When the armhole measures 13 (14) 15 (15) 16 cm, work next RS row to centre 30 (30) 30 (32) 32 sts, place them on a holder and work to end. Then, work each side of the neck separately:

Next row (WS): Work to end.

Next row (RS, starting at neck egde): Cast off 2 sts, work to end.

Next row: Work to end.

Next row: Cast off 2 sts, work to end.

Next row: Work to end.

Next row: Cast off 1 st, work to end.

Next row: Work to end.

Next row: Cast off 1 st, work to end.

Continue working straight and when the armhole measures 22 (23) 24 (24) 25 cm, cast off 28 (32) 36 (37) 39 sts for shoulder.

Work the other side to match, reversing the shapings.

Sleeves

(make 2)

Using yarn A, cast on 56 (58) 60 (62) 64 sts and work 7 cm in rib. Work 4 rows in st st.

Start following colourwork chart from row 1 and repeat the 2 st pattern to end. Work rows 2-4 of the chart. Change to yarn A, and continue in st st.

When the work measures 10 (9) 14 (12) 11 cm, increase 1 st at both ends. Repeat these increases every 2.5 (2.5) 2 (2) 2 cm for 15 (16) 18 (19) 20 times more = 88 (92) 98 (102) 106 sts.

When the work measures 47 (48) 49 (49) 50 cm, change to colourwork and work rows 1-4 of the chart. Change to yarn A, and work 4 rows in s st.

Start shaping the sleeve top:

Cast off 4 (4) 5 (6) 8 sts at the beginning on next 2 rows.

Change to colourwork starting from row 5 of the chart. Repeat the 4 st pattern and at the same time continue shaping the sleeve top:

Keeping pattern correct, cast off 3 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows, 2 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows, 1 st at the beginning of next 32 (34) 38 (40) 40 rows, 2 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows and 3 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.

Continue following the chart until you have finished row 40. Change to yarn A, and work the rest of the piece in st st.

When you have finished shaping the sleeve top, cast off all sts.

Finishing

Lay pieces to measures on a flat surface with the WS facing, wet with a spray bottle and let dry.

Join shoulder seams.

Neck edge: Starting from either shoulder seam, using yarn A and circular needle, pick up and knit sts along both sides of the neck and sts on hold so that you have 106 (106) 106 (110) 110 sts on the needle. Work 6 cm in st st in the round. Cast off all sts using a stretchy cast-off method.

Join sleeve and side seams. Sew sleeves in place.
