- Ribbing in the round:
*k2, p2*

needles, 20 sts on each. The beginning of the round is always between needles IV and I. Work ribbing in the round until the piece measures 4,5 cm. Now knit stockinette stitch in the round for 5 rounds.

Begin the colourwork in the round from row 1 of chart: repeat the 24 st pattern repeat 3 times and knit 8 sts from the right end of the pattern repeat. Knit through rows 2-10 of the chart. Using the off-white yarn knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch.

Continue the colourwork from row 11 of the chart and repeat the 40 st pattern repeat 2 times. Knit through rows 2-20 of the chart. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch using the off-white yarn and then knit rows 21-33 of the chart. Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch using the off-white yarn and then knit rows 34-43 of the chart.

Knit 5 rounds in stockinette stitch using the off-white yarn and on the 1st round decrease 3 sts evenly = 77 sts.

Work rows 21-23 of the chart. Keep repeating the pattern repeat until the end of round (the last repeat is not a full one). Knit row 24 and decrease 3 sts evenly = 74 sts. Knit rows 25-28 of the chart, knit row 29 and at the same time decrease 5 sts evenly = 69 sts. Knit rows 30-33 of the chart.

Knit 2 rounds in stockinette stitch using the off-white yarn and on the 1st round decrease 5 sts evenly = 64 sts. Knit 2 more rounds and on the 2nd round decrease 4 sts evenly = 60 sts.

From row 11 of the chart, knit the 40 st pattern repeat once and then 20 more sts from the right end of the pattern. Knit rows 12-20 of the chart. Knit 5 rounds with the off-white yarn and on the 1st round decrease 4 sts evenly = 56 sts. Distribute the sts evenly on the needles, 14 sts on each.

Change to the smaller needles and knit 4 rounds using the off-white yarn.

Continue the colourwork from row 26 of the chart: repeat the 40 st pattern repeat once and then knit another 16 sts from the right end of the pattern. Knit rows 27-33.

Work in stockinette stitch using the off-white yarn until the leg measures 48 cm in total.

Change the off-white Nordic Wool to the Nalle yarn (all the off-white parts will be knitted with this yarn for the rest of the knit). Begin the heel flap by knitting the sts from needle I onto needle IV = 28 sts. Leave the sts on the other needles on hold. Turn work and begin the reinforced stitch pattern: 1st row: slip 1, purl to the end of row. Turn work. 2nd row: *slip 1, k1*, repeat from * to * for 13 more times. Repeat rows 1-2 for a total of 14 times = 28 rows.

Work row 1 once more and then turn the heel: continue working in the same reinforced stitch pattern. Knit through the right side row until 10 sts remain. Skp (= slip 1, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over) and turn work. Slip 1, p8, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1, knit until 9 sts remain, skp. Continue decreasing the stitches on the sides of the heel flap while the number of center sts remains the same (10 sts). When only these 10 sts remain, divide the sts evenly onto two needles (5 sts, 5 sts).

Using a free needle, pick up 14 sts from the left edge of the heel flap and 1 st from between the needles. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle I. Knit through needles II and III. Pick up 14 sts from the right edge of the heel flap and 1 st from between the needles. Knit the sts through the back loop onto needle IV.

Continue working in stockinette st with these 68 sts and begin the gusset decreases: On needle I, knit until 2 sts remain, k2tog. On needle IV skp, knit to the end of needle. Knit 1 round without decreases, knit the decrease round as before, knit 2 rounds without decreases, knit the decrease round, work 3 rounds without decreases, decrease round. 60 sts on the needles. Distribute the sts evenly onto the needles, 15 sts on each.

Continue the colourwork from row 21 of the chart: knit the 40 st pattern repeat once and then knit another 20 sts from the right end of the pattern. Knit row 22-33. Knit 4 rounds in stockinette stitch using the off-white yarn and then knit rows 34-43. The rest of the sock will be worked in stockinette stitch using the off-white yarn.

When the sole measures approx. 18 cm or when the sock reaches the tip of your smallest toe, begin the toe decreases: Needles I and III: knit until 3 sts remain, k2tog, k1. Needles II and IV: k1, skp, knit to end of needle. Repeat the decreases in this manner every 2nd round until 8 sts remain on each needle. Then switch to working the decreases on each round.

When 8 sts remain in total, break the yarn, pull through the sts and securely weave in the yarn end. Knit the other sock to match.

Finishing

Steam the finished socks lightly.

Use the black and white yarns (2 strands of black + 2 strands of black + 2 strands of white) to make decorative braids approx. 80 cm in length. Pass the braids through the fabric where the ribbing and the stockinette stitch meet. Using the off-white yarn, make tassels approx. 9 cm in length for the braids (see illustration).
