- Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*

Using the Linen yarn, cast on 68 sts and distribute them onto four needles, 17 sts each. The beginning of the round is between needles I and IV. Work 12 rounds of ribbing. Then work 2 rounds of stockinette st.

Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of the chart. Work the 4 st pattern repeat 17 times. Work rows 2-5 of the chart.

Work row 6 and decrease 1 st on needles I and IV = 66 sts.

Work rows 7-17.

Work row 18 and decrease 1 st on needles II and III = 64 sts.

Work rows 19-31.

Work row 32 and increase 1 st on needles II and III = 66 sts.

Work rows 33-45. The leg now measures approx. 19 cm.

Begin the heel flap: move the sts on needle I onto needle IV = 32 sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work and begin the reinforced st pattern using Saffron:

Row 1: slip 1 st, purl to end of row. Turn work.

Row 2: *slip 1 st, k1*, repeat *-* 15 more times. Turn work. Repeat rows 1-2 a total of 14 times (= 28 rows).

Work another WS row and begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced st pattern as established. Work the RS row on the heel flap until 12 sts remain at the left end. Work the skp decrease (= slip 1 st knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over) and turn work. Slip 1 st, p8, p2tog. Turn work. Slip 1 st, work until 11 sts remain, skp. Continue in the same manner, decreasing sts at the sides with 10 sts in the middle. When only the middle sts remain, distribute the heel flap sts onto two needles, 5 sts each.

Pick up onto needle I 14 sts from the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between the needles. Work row 46: using Linen, knit the 5 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop. Knit the sts on needles II and III. Pick up 14 sts from the right edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between the needles. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle IV and knit the 5 heel flap sts.

Continue working the colourwork pattern with all 74 sts and begin the gusset decreases. Continue the pattern from row 47 of chart II, working the gusset decreases as depicted on the chart. Work rows 48-62. 66 sts on the needles after the gusset decreases.

Continue from row 63 of chart I. Work rows 63-87.

Work row 88 and decrease 1 st on needles II and III = 64 sts, 16 sts per needle. The sole now measures approx. 19 cm.

Continue on row 1 of chart III and work the toe decreases as shown. Work rows 2-17. Break the yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.

Knit the other sock to match.
