Eripariset Socks
Jutta Manninen, winner of Novita's striped sock competition, found inspiration for her socks in the deliciously autumnal palette of 7 Veljestä Raita. Starting the self-striping yarn at a different point in each sock turns one yarn into two playfully different socks. Eripariset (Finnish for "mismatched") make a perfect pair, even if they are not quite identical.

Leg
Using colour Autumn Morning, cast on 56 sts and divide them onto 4 needles, 14 sts on each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at centre back. Join to work in the round. Work 10 rounds in twisted 1x1 rib. K 1 round.
Begin colourwork pattern. Work rounds 1–14 of Chart I. The 8-st pattern is repeated 7 times each round.
Using colour Autumn Morning, k2 rounds, the second of which is a decrease round: k1, skp, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. You have 54 sts.
Work rounds 1–6 of Chart II. The 6-st pattern is repeated 9 times each round.
Using colour Autumn Morning, k2 rounds, working the decreases on the second round as before. You have 52 sts.
Work rounds 1–5 of Chart III. The 4-st pattern is repeated 13 times each round.
Using colour Autumn Morning, k2 rounds, working the decreases on both rounds as before. You have 48 sts. Redistribute the sts, placing 12 sts on each needle.
Work rounds 1–8 of Chart IV. The 3-st pattern is repeated 16 times each round. Cut white yarn. Next, work the heel using colour Autumn Morning.
Heel
Begin the heel flap: knit the sts of needle I onto needle IV = 24 sts. Leave the remaining sts on hold. Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (WS): Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p to end. Turn work.
Row 2 (RS): *Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end. Turn work.
Work rows 1–2 a total of 12 times = 24 rows. Then repeat row 1 once more.
Begin turning the heel:
Continue working in reinforced stitch pattern. Work the next row (RS) to last 9 sts, skp, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p6, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, work to last 8 sts, skp, turn work. Continue as established, decreasing at the sides with 8 sts at the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 4 sts on each. Knit the first 4 sts. Continue to work in the round. The round begins here, at the centre of the sole.
Foot
Using needle I, pick up 12 sts along the left side of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and needle II. Knit the 4 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop (twisted). K across needles II and III. Using the needle with 4 sts, pick up 12 sts along the right side of the heel flap + 1 st between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop (twisted), then k4. You have 58 sts.
Work rounds 1–10 of Chart V, working the gusset decreases according to the chart on rounds 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. After the decreases, you have 48 sts, 12 sts on each needle.
Work rounds 1–27 of Chart VI. The 4-st pattern is repeated 12 times each round. Note: Try the sock on as you work. If the fifth toe is covered before Chart VI has been completed, you do not have to finish Chart VI. Just k 1 round using colour Autumn Morning after the last colourwork round. On the other hand, if you need more length in the foot after completing Chart VI, work in stockinette stitch with colour Autumn Morning until the fifth toe is covered.
Cut white yarn. Work the rest of the sock using colour Autumn Morning.
Work in stockinette stitch in the round and begin toe decreases: At the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Decrease as established on every other round until 24 sts remain, 6 sts on each needle. Then work the decreases on every round. When 8 sts remain, cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the remaining sts, tighten and weave in.
Work the second sock in the same way. Start the self-striping yarn (Autumn Morning) in the second sock from where you left off in the first sock. This way the socks will be nicely mismatched, and you won’t be left with leftover yarn from the middle of the skein.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Steam lightly.
