These socks are full of inviting colours which will make every row interesting to knit. Sisko Sälpäkivi designed these gorgeous socks, knitted from Novita Nalle. The pattern is also ideal for using your scrap yarns.

Stitch patterns Twisted ribbing in the round: *k1 through back loop, p1*, repeat *–*.Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rounds.Colourwork in the round: work stockinette st following the chart and instructions.

Gauge 24 sts in colourwork = 10 cm / 4 in

Construction The socks are knitted from cuff to toe.

Cast on 80 sts using Navy and divide them onto four needles, 20 sts each.The beginning of round is between needles I and IV.Work twisted ribbing in the round for 8 rounds.Knit 1 round.

Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart I. Work the 80 st pattern.Work rows 2–85 of the chart. Work the decreases following the chart.2 sts decreased on rows 38, 44, 50, 56, 62, 68, 74, 78, 82 and 85.60 sts on the needles after the decreases.Redistribute the sts so that there are 15 sts on all needles.

Begin heel flap: using Navy, knit the sts of needle I onto needle IV = 30 sts. Leave the other sts on hold.Turn work and purl the WS row.

Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1:(RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end.Turn work.

Row 2:(WS) slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end.Turn work.

Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 15 times = 30 rows.

Begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established.Work the RS row until 11 sts remain.Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work.Slip 1, p8, p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 10 sts, skp.Continue as established, decreasing at the ends with 10 sts in the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 5 sts on needle I and 5 sts on needle IV.Knit the 5 sts of needle IV.The beginning of round is now here.

Pick up sts onto needle I: 16 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the needles.Knit the 5 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop.Needles II and III: knit all sts.Pick up sts onto needle IV: 16 sts from the other end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the needles.Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and knit the 5 flap sts.74 sts in total.

Begin the colourwork pattern on row 2 of chart II.Work rows 2–15 of the chart. Work the gusset decreases following the chart.60 sts on the needles after the decreases.

Work row 16, then work rows 17–41.Use Wild Berries for the rest of the sock.

Note:When the sole measures 20 cm / 7.75 in or when the sock covers the fifth toe, begin toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1.At the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 32 sts remain (8 sts per needle). Then work the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain (2 sts per needle).

Break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.

Knit the other sock in the same manner.

Finishing

Steam lightly.
