Left mitten
Using the off-white yarn, cast on 44(48) sts and distribute them onto four double-pointed needles. The beginning of the round is between needles IV and I. Work ribbing in the round for 10(11) cm.
Work 2 rounds of stockinette st. If you're knitting the smaller size, decrease 1 st on needles I and II on the first round. 42(48) sts on the needles.
Begin the colourwork from row 1 of the chart. Work the 6 st pattern repeat 7(8) times.
When you have worked 6(6,5) cm of colourwork and you have last worked either row 3 or row 7, mark the place for the thumbhole on the next round: after the first 3 sts on needle II, knit the next 7 sts with a different-coloured yarn. Move the different-coloured sts back onto the left needle and continue the colourwork. Work until the piece measures approx. 15(16) cm after the ribbing or until the mitten covers your forefinger.
Continuing the colourwork, begin the top decreases. Use the off-white yarn to work the decreases as well as the 2 sts between decreases (if needed, twist the contrasting colour around the off-white on the WS to avoid long floats). At the beginning of needles I and III: k1 and work the skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, pass the slipped st over). At the end of needles II and IV: k2tog, k1. Work the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain in total. Break the yarn, pass it through the remaining sts and securely weave in.
Right mitten
Work as the mirror image of the left mitten, with the thumbhole on needle III.
Thumb
Remove the different-coloured yarn. Pick up the sts on the top and bottom edge of the thumbhole as well as additional sts from the sides for a total of 16(17) sts. Distribute the sts onto three needles and work stockinette st in the round using the off-white yarn.
When you have worked for 5(5,5) cm or when the thumb covers half your thumbnail, work the top decrease: k2tog at the end of each needle until 4 sts remain in total. Then knit 1 and pass the other sts over from left to right. Securely weave in.
